Middle school teachers at Nah Tah Wahsh PSA (Hannahville Indian School) have expanded their use of technology in their classrooms this year. New Infocus projectors have been mounted in each classroom and attached to the teachers’ computers and DVD/VCR players, enabling teachers to display computer applications, videos, and web sites on large display screens. Recently, Michele Schaefer (grade 6), Lisa Bedard (grade 7) and Greg Ducheny (grade 8) spent a day with Technology Coordinator Brenda Gerber to explore the use of two more valuable technology tools, RF wireless chalkboards, and student response systems. They were also given a day to work together on converting activities, quizzes, and tests to work with the new equipment.
The CPS chalkboard comes with EasiTeach software and includes lesson templates and discipline packets with sample lessons. The software offers you a CPS plug-in, which allows you to vote using CPS without actually being in the CPS program. It allows teachers easy access to their computers and acts as an overhead projector/chalkboard/document camera. More importantly, it gives teachers the mobility in the classroom that is so important to assist students or curb discipline problems.
The group participated in a Webinar on using Qwizdom’s student response system in the classroom. Qwizdom creates a virtual classroom while making teaching easier and learning a fun, interactive experience. Teachers use ready-made presentations or create their own presentations with questions built into them to assess student progress. Students use the handheld devices to respond to the questions. Students receive instant, confidential feedback about their answers. Teachers have immediate feedback on how well students understand the concepts being taught.
When asked how she liked the new technology, Michele Schaefer replied, “Qwizdom is a great learning tool for students. They really enjoy the immediate feedback to their responses. The handhelds keep even fidgety students on task and excited about learning.”
Lisa Bedard replied, “The students love it. I used Qwizdom to create a practice quiz for a science unit test. The students did a good job on the actual test. He immediate feedback really helped them.”
“It’s a fabulous tool,” Greg Ducheny added. “The students are very enthusiastic about Qwizdom. They are excited and love the instant feedback. Of all the technology, this is the most interactive for students.”
